The Effects of Trauma and Child Abuse
Dates: Thursdays 13th and 20th November 2014
Time: 4.00 - 6.00 p.m.
Venue: Swavesey Primary School, Middle Watch, Swavesey, Cambridge. CB24 4RN
- Why do traumatised and abused children behave the way they do?
- Why can they not accept praise?
- Why do traumatised and abused children make me feel the way I do?
- Why is it difficult to sustain a positive relationship with children who have suffered trauma or abuse?
This course aims to offer the answers to these and many other questions.
The effects of trauma and abuse are wide ranging and bewildering, both for the vicitms and for those working with them. Over two sessions, this course will explore how healthy relationships are formed, before moving on to discuss the psychological adaptations that victims of trauma and abuse must make, and some of the consequent behavioural and relational adjustments that they may present to those working with them.
There will be some presentations, small group exercises, as well as some time for those attending to reflect upon their current practice, and to ask questions to the course leader and each other.
This training is relevant to staff in schools, pre-schools, hospices, care homes, hospitals, children’s centres and also to social workers and other related professionals working with children who have suffered trauma or abuse. The psychological and behavioural adaptations that will be discussed pertain to children with or without learning difficulties.
